Markus Robert Loney

Markus Robert Loney

Markus Robert Loney, Plainville, KS, passed away all too soon on December 31, 2021, in Plainville, at the young age of 26. He was born on August 11, 1995, to Douglas and Malynda (Adam) Loney in Rogers, Arkansas.

Shortly after Markus was born, the family relocated to Plainville where he spent the vast majority of his life. Those that know Markus, know he had autism. This never stopped Markus; he attended Plainville High School and graduated with honors in 2014. He was also a part of the Larks Special Olympics. Markus’s favorite place to be was the Topeka Zoo, and a close second was any car ride with his Grandpa Ken. He loved being with his family and was always excited to go on a family vacation or do any family activity. He had many interests, some of which included sports like the Chiefs and Royals, playing Super Mario, and celebrating EVERY holiday. He was always so excited to celebrate something - especially his birthday. Markus was very proud of his rare coin and money collection, although as much as he loved collecting them, any time he saw a donation box of any kind he was trying to fill it with whatever money he had with him!

Markus was a funny, kind, and selfless person. He brought a positive light and awareness to autism, showing us that you could always live your life to the fullest, celebrate every day, and love one another selflessly.

He is survived by his parents, Doug and Malynda Loney of Plainville, KS; siblings, Christopher Loney of Plainville, KS, and MaKayla Loney (Kobe Spiess) of Plainville, KS; grandparents, Ken Adam of Plainville, KS, Ellen Loney of Apache Junction, AZ; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Mary Ann Emery

Mary Ann Emery

Mary Ann (Dinkel) Emery, Stockton, KS, passed away on December 30, 2021, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, KS, at the age of 81. She was born on August 13, 1940, near Leoti, KS to Andrew and Helen (Bauck) Dinkel. She married Lyle "Shorty" Emery on March 28, 1957, during a blizzard, in Garden City, KS. They were blessed with five children: Vicky, Jeff, Connie, Kim, and Walt, their son by choice.

Mary attended school through 9th grade in Goodland and Garden City before her marriage to Shorty. The couple moved around for Shorty's work until settling in Stockton in 1963. Mary was a foster mother to five of her nieces and nephews, bringing the family household up to 12 at one time – she was very good at keeping everyone assembled! Starting at age seven, Mary became a waitress in the family cafe and continued in the restaurant business throughout her life. She also wallpapered and did seamstress work. She managed the Little BB, which was a high school/junior high hang-out, in the winter, and the BB Dairy Inn/Park Drive-in Theatre in the summer.

Mary belonged to VFW Auxiliary Post #8873, was a Den Mother of Boy Scout Troop #103, belonged to St. Thomas Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and Altar Society, where she cooked for 30 years.

Known as 'Gramma' or 'Granny' by many, all can attest to Mary’s huge heart that overflowed with love for family, friends, and neighbors – with an open-door policy, many enjoyed after-Prom breakfasts, Saturday night wrestling, and memories made in the kitchen. Mary loved Christmas; she decorated her home in Stockton continuously for 51 years.

Mary is survived by her children: Jeffrey Emery (Jill) of Stockton, Walter Dinkel (Lisa Preston) of Oakley, KS, Victoria Peterson (David) of Stockton, Constance Yakish (Joe) of Hill City, KS, and Kimberly Arnold of Alton, KS; siblings: Barbara Stoecklein of Colby, KS and Frank Dinkel (Francis) of Garden City, KS; sister-in-law, Carol Dinkel of Huntsville, AL; 32 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary not only tenderly cared for her beloved roses, but also her yard and other flowers. More importantly, she sowed the seeds of love and laughter into the lives of those closest to her. It was by this daily example of living that she taught us all what it truly means to love and care for one another and live every day grateful for the opportunity to humbly serve one another. Although we will miss her greatly, we rejoice that she is now reaping the bountiful harvest of her hard work and loving labor, in the company of her Lord, until we see her again.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton. Burial services will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Stockton. Leon John Hammerschmid

Leon John Hammerschmidt

Leon John Hammerschmidt passed away on his 80th birthday, Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at Redbud Village in Plainville, KS.

From the humblest of beginnings, Leon was born on August 31, 1941 in rural Victoria, Kansas to Joe and Matilda Hammerschmidt, the 5th of 13 children. He grew up on a farm in a small, three-bedroom farmhouse. He attended school and only completed 8th grade before he went to work in the oilfield to help support and provide for his siblings and parents.

He married Melba Jean Fisher on September 14, 1964 in Zurich, Kansas and together they began building their life and family. From this union, six children were born - five daughters and one son.

“The strength of a man is in his character. A strong man is a great man of wisdom, who understands his top priority is to his family.” - Ellen J. Barrier

Leon officially retired after working for 60 years in the oilfield.

His children’s education was important to him. Only formally educated until the 8th grade, it was a priority for him that all 6 of his children graduated from college. He even had a “rule” that they couldn’t get married until they completed their degree, which they all did. He was a generous benefactor to Sacred Heart Grade School and to Sacred Heart Church.

Above all, he was strong in his faith which led to his life full of blessings. Leon was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He gave selflessly and abundantly of his time, talent and treasure to his church. He taught his family the importance of daily prayer and weekly mass. On weekends, he not only attended every Mass, but he was there to turn the lights on, open the doors and greet everyone. He was the last to leave the church as he wanted to make sure all the lights were off. After retirement, he attended all the weekday masses and ushered at every funeral.

“A Man leaves his mark on the world with the love he gives his Children.”

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 58 years, Melba of the home. Children: Marla (Douglas) Jones of Overland Park; Sandra (Norman) Keller of Hays; Jamie (Denise) Hammerschmidt of Highlands Ranch, CO; Kelli (Christopher) Hansen of Plainville; Amanda (Mitch) Mayo of Colorado Springs, CO; and Nicole (Tony) Dopita of Hays. Don Fisher

Donald Lee Fisher

Donald Lee Fisher passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2021 at Hays Medical Center at the age of 84. Donald was born in Coweta, Oklahoma on February 6, 1937 to Boyd and Amy (Bryan) Fisher. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann (Moeder) Fisher on June 11, 1960 in Hoisington, Kansas at the St. John’s Catholic Church. The couple was blessed with four daughters: Melanie, Mindy, Michelle, and Melissa.
Donald grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from Coweta High School in 1955. Following high school, he spent a semester at OSU. He then went into the military where he was stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1962, he returned to Kansas to work in the oil field.
Donald worked for ARCO Oil Company for 40 years where he was a Fieldman among many other titles. He was also a faithful member of the Plainville Knights of Columbus where he served as Plainville’s Grand Knight for four years, and the Bishop Cunningham Faithful Navigator for two years.
Donald was an avid outdoorsman with much of his time being spent hunting, fishing, and gardening. He went on many hunting and fishing excursions with his friends including Father Grennan and Ronnie Wise. Once they could no longer go, his grandsons stepped up and continued the tradition with Donald. He made many memories during his time outdoors and he enjoyed retelling these stories to his family. He also spent time with friends playing Pinochle multiple times a week. He loved to cook and would make his famous grilled chicken, always with a cocktail preceding the meal. Donald loved testing his luck at the Cripple Creek Colorado Casino with his wife of 60 years.
Family was immensely important to Donald. Some of the fondest memories of him include chopping down trees for their annual Christmas fire, and the countless fires that he would make at his home. He was very proud of that fireplace. Another much loved family tradition was making sausage every Christmas. Don also never forgot a birthday and would sing “happy birthday” through the phone - even though he was tone deaf! He would give all his grandkids a dollar bill whenever they left his house. What started out as a foreseen treat from grandpa, became one of the family’s fondest memories of his giving nature.
Donald was loving and caring towards everyone he was around. His huge, outgoing personality shined through him. Whenever you saw him, there was certainly a story to be heard with many laughs to follow. He was also very black-and-white when he needed to be, very sure of the way things should be done, after all…something worth doing is worth doing well. Always serving others with a heart and soul that knew and trusted his Lord and Savior, his loss will leave a place in the hearts and lives of family and friends no one else can fill. However, he leaves a collection of memories and precious times shared - true keepsakes of our hearts that will remain forever.

Rita was highly involved with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, assisting with any of the functions the church put on. Edward Jerome Brummer

Edward Jerome Brummer

Edward J. Brummer passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the Solomon Valley Manor in Stockton, Kansas at the age of 88. He was born to John and Katherine (Simeon) Brummer on January 7, 1933 in Osborne County, Kansas. Edward married Bertha Hays on October 26, 1963 in Osborne, Kansas, and they were blessed with six children: Jill, Edward “Eddie”, Jennifer, Connie, Jeanette, and Elizabeth.

Edward grew up in rural Osborne where he attended school until 8th grade. He then went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad before he was drafted into the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned home and worked as a mechanic at his own shop from 1965 until 2017 when he retired.

A true “car guy”, Edward loved everything about cars. Fixing them, driving them, collecting them, and teaching others to do the same. He not only loved working on his own cars, but also on cars for other people and visiting with his customers. He taught all his kids how to change the oil and a flat tire at the very least before they left home. So many memories were built around cars; they were like friends to him as he kept every single one of them. Interestingly enough, he stopped buying them in the 70’s as he would say, “plastic had no place on a car!” Although his 1960 Corvette was arguably his most prized possession, it didn’t hold a candle to his family, especially his grandkids. Edward made sure that he took vacation time with his family every year and taught one of his grandsons, Dalton, to play the guitar.

A hard-working, loving and dedicated family man of God, Edward loved the simple life, recognized his blessings, and didn’t take time for granted. Although he will be greatly missed by all who knew him, his love and invaluable influence will remain in the hearts and lives of his family and friends. May his legacy inspire each of us to encourage one another, cherish the ties that bind, and live to serve God, Home, and Country everyday of our lives.

Left to cherish his memories are his children; Jill (Mike) Roth of Savannah, MO, Edward “Eddie” (Nancy) Brummer of Natoma, KS, Jennifer Brummer of Plainville, KS, Connie Brummer (Tracy) of Stockton, Jeanette (Jason) Miller of Olathe, KS, and Elizabeth (Jarrod) Selenke of Peyton, CO; nine grandchildren, Amber, Aja, Dalton, Hunter, Gavin, Joslyn, Liz, Joe, and Kris; and six great-grandchildren, Piper, Taron, Garrett, Gabriella, Greyson, and Gracianna.

He is joined in Heaven by his parents, John and Katherine Brummer; wife, Bertha Brummer; brothers, John, Leo, Bob, Joseph, and Al Brummer; sisters, Amelia Landry, Mary Payton, Alberta King, Roberta Brummer, Maxine Brummer, and Eldora Stroh; and grandchildren Eric Ouse, and Allen and Austin Wolf.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 2PM until 8PM with a Vigil starting at 7PM at the funeral home.
